Ha ha ha ha ...

Great post. Fun blog. (Guitar Hero: The Heroin Years? Groan!) I'm betting on the GD in the next round against Phish, too.

And I love the idea for your book and the bits I read on Amazon are very clever and well-written. A mystery novel set in the '85 parking lot scene? I'll bite. Got a review copy to send to Kathmandu? :-)

I'd be happy to send a review copy - but only because of your notorious control of the Kathmandu press… Drop me an email with your address at edwattsbookforkathmandu@gmail.com (seriously, I just set up the account to avoid my real account from getting hi-jacked by robot spammers). Thanks! -Ed

I must admit I was going to reply without even clicking the link; calling into question your overall mental state. But I did click first and enjoyed the read. You are probably the first person to examine the song in such a way...well, in ANY way...and kudos for the fine effort.

Favorite section:
"You and the band have gone through a lot together. They encore with it. You quietly wonder what you’ve done with your life over the last 20 years."

It's an understatement to say that I'm deep in the minority here, but I always liked this song. This one has some great keyboard work

I don't love the tune but It certainly doesn't rub me the way it does most heads. My beef with the tune isn't so much the message or that it was overplayed. I just think musically it's a ripoff of US Blues. More lazy song writing than anything else.

You said it before I could . It just seemed like a quickly dashed kind of song, that Garcia could write in his sleep ( I guess he sort of already written it, as you point out ),I have no problem with the lyrics, I guess Hunter liked them . Maybe with a little more work... And something that always bugs me in other Dead Songs, is the lead out being the repeating of a phrase ("Shake it, Shake it Sugreee", "Driving that Train...", "Sure don't know what I'm looking for ..." etc .)., in this case "Keep your DAAAYY JOB..." , it just keeps going on and on .
Oh and good work Ed Watts , at bringing attention to a curious case in the Dead songbook .

REALLY agree with your last point... can't wait for that Deal to finally go DOWN!

There were so many times when they just didn't know when to quit. The repeating coda is a major weakness.

Sometimes that sort of thing works live, when you were there . I remember the long drawn out show-biz ending to "Around and Around", in the late Keith & Donna era . It was fun then and there, but from the jaded ( and sometimes grumpy) position of having to hear that at every other show from say 78, it gets old . And one of the benefits of the big guitar solo that got tacked on the end of Deal in late 80, was better than the original ending, you refer to . Funny, I don't mind the repeat ending of "Might as Well," which is sort of muggingly goofy ("we'll be right back folks , don't touch that dial").

Ed,

That was very entertaining. I enjoyed that. You also bring up a good point with further. I would love to get a nice audience recording of the gig when/if they ever bust that out. God knows what the reaction would be.

I actually had (still have) my huge yellow button that I wore to every show which says: "NO MORE DAY JOB!"

Yes, I was part of the effort.

I suppose if given the choice of being held prisoner for eternity surrounded by flames and forced to endure boiling hot enemas while listening to either: 1.) any Flock of Seagulls song -or- 2.) Day Job...

I would have to pick Day Job. But just barely

OK, let me ask you this - so how about eternal flames, hot enemas, etc, and choice between: 1) Day Job or 2) Money, Money (from Mars Hotel)?

Also, yellow button = nice!!!

A tougher one: Day Job or anything by Brent?

Case for Day Job: At least you'd have an eternity to find deep layers of meaning in it. "These hot enemas are merely my day job. All things must pass. Painfully."

Case for Brent tunes: The hot flames and boiling enemas would cause you to howl loud enough to block the sound, which would make you appreciate the hot flames and boiling enemas, and hence reinterpret them as a blessing.
